Beasts of Living Waters

stop-motion animation with fabric and yarn

music by Helen Forsythe

17:00 min

2025

This film explores tensions between comfort, fear, wonder, and shame in childhood religious contexts, expressed through an abstracted retelling of the bible story Jonah and the Whale. I also explore the ambiguity of religion as a space that can be absurd or sacred, harmful or healing. I structured my film around the three days Jonah spends in the whale, creating three vignettes where the character visits the belly, heart, and eye of the whale. This film has been screened at Q.arma Gallery, Open Eye Theater, and Resource Mpls.
