Luca Isa Trujillo (b. 2000) is a queer, Colombian-American  stop-motion animator and fiber artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Luca was raised in Lawrence, Kansas and studied Studio Art at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, where they completed the St. Olaf Emerging Artist Program 2024-25. They are currently a part of the Incubator Residency at Public Functionary in Minneapolis. Luca's work has been exhibited at Public Functionary, Conkling Gallery, PLOT Gallery, Q.arma Gallery, and the Flaten Art Museum. Their films have been screened in the Serpentina Film Festival, Cinefilmu Festival, and Franconia Sculpture Park.

artist statement

I connect fiber art and stop-motion animation as a form of experimental storytelling. I animate with yarn, fabric, natural fibers, weavings, paper-mache, and handmade paper to create work that blends tactile craft with the animating process. Composed of hundreds of photographs that capture intricate movements, my work bridges a physical, sculptural process with ephemeral and fluid imagery. I am inspired by myths, folk art, textile craft, ecology, and magical realism. My animations are rooted in the senses, including detailed textures and patterns, immersive audio, and dance-like movement. With these elements I explore the tender and challenging relationships between human bonds, the body, queerness, and the natural world.
